Maree Brink

Maree Brink - Chairman

Maree was born in Quebec, Canada in 1963. He completed his schooling at Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch. He attended Stellenbosch University where he obtained honours degrees in Commerce and Accountancy. Maree qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1992. After five years with Price Waterhouse Coopers, Maree founded the Village & Life Group of Companies in 1994. Maree is a keen tennis player and can often be found either on the court, off road enduro motorbiking or kitesurfing.

Frank Kilbourn

Frank Kilbourn - Non-Executive Director

Frank Kilbourn was born 7 September 1961 and afer matric he furthered his studies at the Rand Afrikaans University where he obtained his B Comm, BA (Hons), LLB, LLM, H Dip Tax degree. Frank qualified as a commercial attorney after he completed his articles at Hofmeyer inc. Frank joined Standard Corporate & Merchant Bank in 1991 as Director: Corporate Finance. In 1996 he was appointed as Non-Executive Director for City Lodge Hotels where he is still a member of the City Lodge Board. Frank was a board member of South African Tourism for 10 years, 3 of which he served as the Chairman. In 2004 Frank and his family moved to Cape Town and incorporated “Bright Equity”, a company specializing in corporate advice and private equity.

Johannes Lategan

Johannes Lategan - Investments

Johannes was born in Oudtshoorn, South Africa in 1967. He completed his schooling at Oudtshoorn High. He attended Stellenbosch University where he obtained a degree in Accountancy. At the University of South Africa he obtained an honours degree in Commerce. He joined Village n Life in 1994 after completing three years with Price Waterhouse Coopers and lives in Camps Bay with his wife Ilsebe and his three daughters, Mila, Kristi and Isabelle.

Roelof Troskie

Roelof Troskie - Sales

Roelof was born in Claremont, Cape Town in 1965. He completed his schooling at Groote Schuur High, Cape Town. He attended the University of Cape Town, earning his B-Com degree. Roelof qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1992 after completing his articles at Price Waterhouse Coopers. He obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Tax Law at the University of Cape Town. Roelof is a sports enthusiast! He also loves a round of golf (handicap of 11) and attends most rugby games at Newlands Stadium. Roelof has been involved in the tourism and hospitality industry since 1995.

Jo-Ann Strauss

Jo-Ann Strauss - Non-Executive Director

Jo-Ann was born and raised in Cape Town and attended Stellenbosch University where she graduated with a B.Comm (Law) degree in 2002. She has gone on to become one of South Africa’s top TV personalities and is a media entrepreneur who has produced and hosted various shows and online properties. She serves on the boards of the University of Stellenbosch’s Graduate School of Business as well as Media24 and M&C Saatchi Abel. UNICEF appointed her as Goodwill Ambassador in 2016. She is an international speaker who has hosted over 200 events across the globe and has travelled extensively with her work in media. She enjoys spending time with her family and traveling with them to fun destinations. She has a keen interest in social media and has produced one of the world’s largest social media competitions.

Johann du Plessis

Johann du Plessis - Chief Operating Officer

Johann was born in Johannesburg and attended Birchleigh High School. After his hotel training with Protea Hotels and completing CPMD Business through Wits, Johann made his way to Sun City Resort. Later he moved to Legend Lodges, Hotels & Resorts as Director of Operations. Not content with bush life, he craved a new challenge, and move to Cape Royale Luxury Hotel & Spa in Cape Town. He enjoys off road enduro, road cycling and is a rugby fanatic. Johann resides in Cape Town with his wife Wendy and his son Liam. Johan joined Village n Life in 2014.

Riaan Veldtmann

Riaan Veldtmann - Chief Financial Officer

Riaan grew up in the northern suburbs of Cape Town, and completed his schooling at Stellenberg High School in Durbanville. After completing his Bachelors degree in Accounting at the University of Stellenbosch, Riaan proceeded with his articles at LDP auditors in Durbanville, and at the same time managed to study part time and obtain his Honours degree through UNISA. He enjoys all forms of sport, especially rugby, cricket and golf and loves travelling abroad. Riaan has been with Village n Life since 2006.

Shaun Slabber

Shaun Slabber - Company Secretary

Shaun grew up in Cape Town, South Africa. He completed his schooling at DF Malan High School in 2001. Shaun is a CIMA Dip. Management Accountant – CIMA qualification expected by end of 2017. He is a sports enthusiast and would love to attend the next Olympic Games and Rugby World Cup. Shaun is also passionate investment analysis and spends a lot of effort and time to upskill himself in this arena by reading biographies of all the great hedge fund managers. Shaun lives in Green Point with his wife, Samantha.

Stache February

Stache February - Group Reporting Officer

Stache was born in Cape Town and is a registered Chartered Accountant with SAICA. She completed her undergraduate and post-graduate studies at Stellenbosch University. Before joining Village n Life, she was employed at PwC Stellenbosch. She is passionate about personal development and regularly completes online courses to keep up to date with the latest developments.

1994

The group’s Founder, Maree Brink, conceptualized and initiated the Village Hospitality Concept with the launch of Harbour View Cottages, also known as Cape Town’s First Guest Street, in a historical area which is now known as De Waterkant Village Launched Private Special Purpose Funds with a long term vision to invest in tourism related assets and financed by South African banks. The first investment was 7 houses in De Waterkant.

1995

Private Special Purpose Fund purchased The Bay Hotel on the basis of a full repairing

1996

Village n Life Limited was incorporated as a specialist management company. Founding Directors were Maree Brink and Johannes Lategan Launched the Tourism Participation Property Model, affording private residential property owners the opportunity to buy property and participate in the dynamics of the tourism industry. Benefits include enhanced rental returns, hassle-free ownership and private occupation when required. The model is unique and its income is not pooled; each property is managed individually and Village n Life fees is incentive driven. Notice periods are 6 – 12 months. To date (2016), 178 owners with residential property to the value of R1,5 billion are participating. A further 133 properties to the value of R500 million, owned by Village n Life’s Private Special Purpose Fund and directors, participates.

1997

Launched a specialized estate agency www.vnlrealty.com.

2000

Private Special Purpose Fund purchased, after which Village n Life launched De Waterkant House, a guest house, situated in the popular area of De Waterkant.

Conceptualized and launched Camps Bay Resort, a fun and vibrant seaside resort, located across from Camps Bay beach. The vision was to offer a resort experience, with centralized reception and services. Private Special Purpose Funds commenced buying up properties for this purpose in Camps Bay (2016, own over 46 title deeds).

2001

Conceptualized and launched Waterfront Village at the Marina Residential in the V & A Waterfront. To date (2016), the venture consists of over 100 participating residential properties in what is known as the most expensive residential development in Africa.

Launched our Private Property Banking Service, an unique investment service offering private individuals an advisory service, financial structuring and administration services. Today this service is rendered through VNL Wealth and headed by Johannes Lategan and Shaun Slabber.

2002

Private Special Purpose Fund purchased Earl’s Dyke and bordering properties and redeveloped as
Camps Bay Retreat, a boutique hotel set on 4.5 acres of private nature reserve.

2003

Private Special Purpose Fund purchased 24 properties in Mouille Point. Village n Life launched
Mouille Point Village.

Roelof Troskie joined Village n Life as Managing Director.

2004

Village n Life took over the lease and management of The Bay Hotel in December 2004.

2006

Private Special Purpose Fund purchased and Village n Life conceptualized, developed and launched
The Charles Guest House in De Waterkant.

2007

Launched The Glen Apartments, luxury serviced apartments in Camps Bay

Private Special Purpose Fund bought The Farmhouse Hotel in Langebaan on the West Coast. The Farmhouse Hotel offers splendid lagoon views, delicious hearty meals and an Afrikana Museum

Launched a wellness company, Mint Wellness, which operates spas and salons

2008

Developed the adventure and tours portal, in order to offer Village n Life guests travel, tours and adventure experiences from carefully selected suppliers and operators.

2009

Riaan Veldtmann appointed as Finance Director and now Chief Financial Officer: Serviced Places.

2010

Launched The Crystal, luxury serviced apartments in Camps Bay, with 24 participating sea-facing apartments.

Launched Traveller’s Places as a unique concept offering international travellers an opportunity to stay in creative spaces, in the best locations at affordable prices.

Launched Sandy B, a private beach club in Camps Bay.

2011

Private Special Purpose Fund commenced the purchase of Village n Life’s Hermanus Collection consisting of New Wing Harbour House, the Manor House and Le Paradis and later went on to purchase Quarters Hotel, as well as lease and develop Village Square.

Village n Life took over management of Harbour House Hotel in Hermanus

2013

Launched Silo Apartments. Located in Silo 2 in the Clock Tower precinct of the V & A Waterfront, Silo Apartments offer long term, serviced rentals that are perfectly prepared and efficiently organized to allow guests to slip seamlessly into local living.

2014

Private Special Purpose Fund purchased and renovated the historical Stone Cottages in Camps Bay.

Launched our Tourism Creative Agency (“TCA”), a full service boutique creative agency specializing in the advertising and marketing needs of the hospitality and tourism industry.

2015

Private Special Purpose Fund purchased the Quarters Hotel (renamed Harbour Square Hotel). Village n Life secured 10 Village Square apartments on a long-term lease. The property will collectively form the Village n Life Hermanus Collection and will be hosted and managed by Harbour House Hotel.

Created a dynamic, independent and specialized venture, VnL Sales, which would host all off-site and on-line sales and marketing activities. Roelof Troskie was appointed Chief Executive Officer.

2016

Village n Life reached sales revenue of over R350 million, staff of 600 and properties under exclusive management, valued over R3 billion (Private Special Purpose Funds of R1,3 billion and tourism participating properties of R1,7 billion).
